Honda Classic Preview: Wise and I Drill Holes

I made 20 lineups last week and all 20 contained Joaquin Niemann. Somehow I still managed to only break even. It didn’t take long to see why. His name is Talor fucking Gooch. He was too busy responding to MeechDFS on Twitter and finished with the 5th worst score. I’m not quite yet sure whether that’s variance or just a complete fucking blunder by me. I’m leaning towards the former, but the sample size is just too small to know for sure. How could anyone possibly predict such an implosion combined with him going full KD on a rando? Now we know.

I’ll get right into my plays for the Honda Classic at PGA National.

In the $10k range, we are going back to the well with Joaquin. The iron is extremely hot right now and he’s playing as well as anyone in the world. Ride the train while you can. I’m not sure if people are afraid of chasing points or something, but you will seemingly be able to get him at lower ownership than the others in this same price range. I will also likely play a bit of Sung-Jae Im. He won this tournament in 2020 and always carries significant upside. I stumbled upon a video of Joaquin leaving LA after his win at Riviera:

My favorite play in the $9k range is Shane ‘The Brain’ Lowry. Another play I like in this range is Keith Mitchell. There’s nothing I can even do with that name, I actually just like the play. He’s coming off a top-ten finish in Phoenix and a 12th place finish at Pebble Beach. He’s been playing extremely well outside of the one week where he must have removed a rib, proceeded to suck his own dick, and miss the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open. There’s simply no other explanation for shitting the bed like that.

In the $8k range, we are firing up the PJ and going to fucking Vegas. Jhonattan Vegas is a great value at $8.5k and is one of my favorite overall plays this week. Another play I like is Gary Woodcock. He has been fucking terrible and the course is tough, but he certainly has the talent to snap out of it and play well. This field isn’t as strong and he’s made 8 straight cuts at PGA National. The final play I like in this range is Christiaan Bezuidenhout. He didn’t make the cut at Riviera, but has played well this year and is in a great spot to bounce back.

In the $7k range, look no further than C.T. ‘Peter’ Pan. He’s hot, coming off of a top 10 finish at Riviera, and has been good at this course (he finished T3 last year). The other play I like is the Poulterguist, Ian Poulter. I’ll also have a few lineups with Denny McCarthy. I found this video of Ian walking out of his hotel room at the Honda Classic last year:

In the $6k range, it’s Kramer Hitchcock week. His purpose will not be denied. The other two plays I like in this range are the Ghim Reaper and Matthew NeSmith. NeSmith had a great week at Riviera and made the cut. His success was overshadowed by a couple other $6k scrubs having good tournaments. He will see very little ownership and is a good play in a weaker field.

It is time for the Honda Classic CGG. This week it is Aaron Wise. Not only is he one of the best values in the entire field, but he also has the potential to be one of the highest-scoring golfers. It was a gross oversite not having Joaquin as the CGG last week, but this time I got it right. When Aaron is drilling his final hole to win the tournament I will simultaneously be drilling a hole through my wall with my uncontrollable erection.

I’ll be back next week.
