Charles Schwab Challenge Preview: Spieth and the Grand Slam Breakfast

It was early into the tournament when I could stop looking at my lineups this past week. Talor Gooch gurgled on his own Gooch, finishing +10. There is nothing more dejecting than the anticipation of a major only to be completely fucked on the first day or two like I have been in this PGA Championship and the Masters. It doesn’t get worse than my 75% ownership Zalatoris WD from the Masters, but this Gooch +10 was close. Live shot of Gooch:

I thought about Scheffler for a while and he will definitely be in the mix to win, but that price tag is a bit too high when you can get Morikawa (Iron Man) for over $1k less. Morikawa is projected to be 12% owned, which is the lowest of any of the top guys outside of Homa who no one should be playing for $10k+. He finished T26 last week at the PGA Championship but was the runner up here at this event in 2020 and finished T14 in 2021. He’s somehow flying a bit under the radar, but I’ll be firing.

It gets really bad really quickly this week. Sam Burns somehow won this last year but he has been complete dogshit to start this year. He is not playable at that price. I hate playing this guy for some reason but it’s Chris Kirk time. He is the only name that I can stomach in this range. I wanted to play Fleetwood or Sung-jae but those ownerships are too high at around 20%. For half that, I’ll just play Kirk. He finished T15 here last year and finished top 30 in both majors this year.

Get in the fucking car. We are going to Denny’s. It’s been a long time since I sucked down a grand slam breakfast but it’s back on the menu this week. You could say he’s back. He finished T29 last week at the PGA Championship and T8 at the Wells Fargo Championship earlier this month. The price tag might be scaring people off a bit (8% ownership projection), but not me. I’m playing him this week.

Ryan Fox owes me money and this is the week the bill comes due. This $7k range is fucking abysmal but his name stands out to me. He hasn’t played in this event, but finished T23 and T26 at the two majors this year and has been very consistent other than the two weeks I played him. The ownership is a little scary for someone in the $7ks (8%), but I’ll accept it.

I don’t have many ideas for this $6k range. It’s borderline unplayable or actually unplayable. I want to play Michael Cock Block reaaaaal bad after last week but there’s no way. The only golfer I’ll play below $7k is likely Nate Lashley. He’s been largely dogshit at this event outside of a T32 in 2021, but he finished T23, T27, T39, and T31 in his last 4 events this year. That’s all you can ask for in this price range.

It’s time for the Cash God Guarantee. This week it’s Jordan Spieth. I hate playing this guy but this is clearly the best play in the field. There is a chance he is hurt and will WD, but I’m banking on that not happening to get some low ownership and a potential winner. He’s still somehow projected 15%, but is only $9.9k. To say he takes his cock out at this event is the understatement of the decade. He hasn’t finished outside the top 10 in the last 4 years and has a runner-up in 2021. I’m all fucking in. Live shot of me when Spieth wins it:

I’ll be back next week.
