Valero Texas Open Preview: Hadwin and the Geezers

I don’t have anything to say about that last tournament. I got completely shit on. 0 lineups cashing. Noren was fucking terrible even though he didn’t have an opponent for one of his rounds. Paul Casey saw one drive out of Noren and decided he was fucking cooked so he withdrew. It simply comes down to bad variance when he still doesn’t make it out of the group section. Then my bracket champion, Hovland, gurgled his own sack for 3 full days. I found a video of Casey whispering to tournament officials after Noren’s drive:

I’ll get right into the plays this week. I’ve been seeing a lot of hype around Rory. He has played here one time (finishing second) and is seemingly the only good golfer actually playing this week so it’s probably not a bad idea to slip him in a few. Otherwise, in the $10k+ range, I’ll mostly have Ancer and Spieth. Spieth is the defending champion and 4 made cuts and a top 2 finish in his last 5 tournaments. I cannot play Hidicki’s sorry ass again after what he did at The Players, I don’t feel like waking up to a video of him sucking his own dick on Thursday. I deleted his name from the optimizer.

The talent falls off a bit of a cliff when we get to $9k. I don’t know how Gary Woodcock is $9.3k. Having said that he finished 6th at this event last year and has 2 top 5 finishes in his last 4 tournaments. It seems as if he’s ready to unleash the Woodcock on the field once again.

The other play I like in this range is Si Woo Kim. He’s made the cut in 4 of his last 5 times playing here, including a 4th place finish in 2020. He is one of the lowest projected owned golfers in the $9ks. I don’t see a reason why he won’t be the best play in this range.

There are several plays I like in the $8k range. For the first one, there’s no need to look further than Patton “the Jizzer” Kizzire. He may be the best play in the entire field. He finished 9th at this event last year and has made 5 straight cuts. The Jizzer is on fire. Here’s a leaked video of The Jizzer on the 18th green after he wins it with a 45-foot putt:

A few other golfers I like in this $8k range are Luke List and gas up the fucking jet, we are going to Jhonattan Vegas. Vegas is a bit underpriced, given the weak field. He has been hit or miss at this event with only two made cuts but finished 4th last week at the Puntacana Championship.

The $7k range is my favorite section this week. The overall field is weak as some of the better players prepare for the Master’s next week, so there is some value here. I’ll just go ahead and say it. It’s time for Richard “Dick” Bland. Dick is certainly not limp – he just became the oldest golfer to make it out of a match play group at age 49. He is a great play this week, despite never playing in this event, he’s hot at the right time.

Another one of my favorites in this range is Matt Kuchar. We are keeping it rolling with the geezers. He has a 12th place finish and 7th place finish at this event in 2021/2020 and is coming off a 16th place finish at Valspar in his last 2022 event. Big Kuch needs a win to qualify for the Masters, the motivation is there.

My final play in the $7k range is Charles Howell III. He took a shit into his own throat last year at this event, but he’s good value and will be almost unowned. His last tournament was a made cut in a tough field at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

There are three names I like in the $6k range. The first is David Lipsky. He has never played in this event but is coming off of a T7 at Putacana last week. He has a few notable made cuts at the Honda Classic and Arnold Palmer Invitational (finished 26th). At his price ($6.9k) you can’t ask for much more.

Richy Weinereski is the second golfer I like here. These are the types of events that he thrives in. The field is pretty much complete shit. He is a bit under the radar and will be less than 1% owned, but he’s a great play coming off of a T21 at Valspar.

This last one is a bit of a wildcard. Peter Uihlein (6k) is the absolute min price. He has gurgled on his dick twice in this event finishing in the 105th and 113th, but he has played extremely well in his last 5 events including a second-place finish (terrible field on the Korn Ferry, but still). I like him as a sprinkle throughout lineups.

It’s time for the Valero CGG. This week it’s Adam Hadwin. He has two straight top 10 finishes in his bag, including one at The Players. He needs a win to be in the field next week at the Master’s. He may catch some ownership, but I expect him to take IT out at a course where he’s 2/2 on cuts including a top 25 finish in 2021. Live shot of my living room when he lifts the trophy on Sunday and punches his ticket to the Master’s next week:

I’ll be back next week.
