Farmers Insurance Open Preview: Homa and the Wood

I could not weather the storm. Ryders on the storm completely fucked my single-entry lineup with his missed cut. Papa Jon is absolutely dialed in right now he is going to be a very tough fade going forward, despite some inevitable regression. Live look at Papa Jon:

It’s time for the plays.

Not often will you be able to play Xander Schauffele at over $1k less than Papa Jon, but in the instances that it happens I’ll have a hard time fading. If you aren’t playing the Papa I don’t know that there is much of a choice other than maybe Tony. Morikawa will be reeling from that blown lead at the Tournament of Champions for weeks. I will not be touching him with a ten-foot pole. On the other hand, Xander is my favorite play in the $10ks.

Not many have run colder than BigDicki to close out last season and start this season, but he will put it together at some point. That is a borderline disrespectful price in this field. His recent results in this tournament are not inspiring, but he does have a T3 on the books from 2019. At $9k I just can’t fade.

It’s time to go back to the well. The Will the Thrill well. Whatever back injury he was dealing with seems to be behind him. He still hasn’t had a great finish yet this year, but this is the tournament where he starts to whip cock. He’s finished with back-to-back top 10s, including a runner-up last year. I fully expect him to take Rahm’s wins personally and show that he can compete. He should be somewhat under-owned at $9.7k. The Thrill sinking a putt for the win on Sunday:

If you’re looking for the course history king this week look no further than Jason fucking Day. He pulls out the mammoth dick year after year at this event, finishing top 5 (with a win) in 3 of his last 5 Farmers Insurance Opens. There’s always a chance he gurgles his own sack like he did in 2021, finishing T122, but at $8.8k you won’t get much more upside.

It’s time for a geezer and another course history king. It’s time for Justin Rose. Similar to Day, he sack-drags this event, finishing top 10 in 3 of his past 5 tournaments. He started this season with a T26 last week at the American Express so he also has a warmup round under his belt. He might catch some ownership because of his low price, but I can’t fade. Live look at the green DK bags when Rose starts to climb the leaderboard:

I used to play him nearly every week and there’s no better time to gurgle down the fucking well water. It’s Gary Woodcock’s time. You do not know what you are going to get out of this guy each week. It could be an easy top 10 or it could be the worst performance you’ve ever seen in your life. His course history has it all, including a top 10 and a T93. At $7.4k he is worth a shot and I’ll be playing him despite his missed cut at the Sony Open two weeks ago.

This next golfer is one I have definitely never played in my life. Robby fucking Shelton. He’s coming off of a T6 at The American Express and has finished T16 and T36 in his last two Farmers Insurance Opens. Pairing him with either Woodcock or course legend Ryan Palmer should give enough salary relief to get to any of the top players.

The $6k range is absolutely brutal this week. I have no choice but to click on the Ghim Reaper. He’s made the cut in 3 out of the past 4 years at this tournament, finishing T34 last year. That would likely be close to enough at $6.8k. I truly don’t see a better option in the dumpster range and at least he will be low owned.

It’s time for the Cash God Guarantee. Not many golfers are in better form (other than Rahm of course) than Max Roma. He finished last season with a win at the Fortinet Championship, played a key role in USA’s win at the Presidents Cup, then started this season with a T3 at the Sentry Tournament of Champions at the start of January. He gurgled his own sack last year at this tournament, finishing T80, but I fully expect a bounce back weekend and he’s finished top 10 here before. He has as good of a chance as anyone else at beating Rahm. I will gurgle down a victory Roma pizza in Max’s honor.

I’ll be back next week.
